While internal links link one feature or item to another within your Event App, such as an Agenda Session to a speaker profile, external links link to areas outside your Event App, such as a website.

Use external links to link a speaker's profile to their online portfolio or social pages, or link a sponsor's profile to their website, to name only a couple examples. If a website is embeddable, you can even show the content directly inside the web version of your Event App. The options for external links are as endless as the internet. 🌐

💡 Keep in mind, sponsors, exhibitors, and speakers can add external links when they use collaboration forms. Only you can add internal links.

Where to add external links

Add external links

When adding or editing an item in one of the features mentioned above, simply click the Add External Links section to expand it, then supply the following information:

The Add External Links section of a New Item modal. Website and Phone link types have been added.
  • Link Type - Click the drop-down to select the type of content you're linking to. Each link type shows links in corresponding categories in the Event App.

  • Link Name - Enter an informative, action-oriented name for the link. This field is required because it displays to attendees on the Event App.

  • Website URL/Phone Number/Email Address - Depending on which Link Type you chose, enter the appropriate information without spaces or dashes in the phone number. Double-check for typos.

  • Open link in external browser - This checkbox is available nearly anywhere you enter a link to an external website, including the Web Link and Web List features. Test external links thoroughly to make sure everything works as intended.

    • If you uncheck this option, the embeddable website or content opens inside your Event App's web version. If the website isn't embeddable, a sad face icon displays on the web version.

    • For Mobile App users, content always opens in their device's default web browser.

💡 Keep in mind, the 'Open link in external browser' checkbox isn't available for the Custom Tab in the Live Stream feature or Sessions. Links in the Custom Tab will always open inside your Event App's web version.

  • Pass Data to URL - This checkbox is also available anywhere you enter a link to an external website. Check this option to let attendee information pass from Webex Events to an external website. Before your event, test to verify that information is passing as expected. Refer to our Pass Data to URL article for more information.

After you add external links, click and drag the six-dot cluster next to an item to rearrange it. Click the X icon to remove an item.

Pro Tips! 😎

  • Make sure you have permission to share phone numbers or email addresses.

  • There's no limit to the number of external links you can add! Include any related links that help build a great experience for your attendees.

  • Consider using UTM codes or click-tracking software (e.g., bit.ly) to track your URLs and find out who's going to the linked websites from your Event App. This is a great metric to show sponsors!

  • If you're using sponsorship tiers, consider more links for higher tiers — gold sponsors could have unlimited links, while bronze sponsors could have a link to their website only.
