About Closed Captions

Closed Captions (CC) are an available option when using Socio Streaming and/or the Socio RTMP Player! Simply select a compatible CC provider and plug in their information. The CC provider you choose will listen in to your streams and provide live CC, even if you're streaming pre-recorded content.

⭐️ Keep in mind, Closed Captions are only supported in the Web App, and aren't supported in the Mobile App.

Attendees will see a Show Captions button beneath the Live Stream. Once revealed, the Captions can be hidden again, or users can select a language if multiple languages have been added for your event.

⭐️ Keep in mind, presenters won't be able to see CC unless they are watching the stream as an attendee.

Closed Captions Providers

We work well with SyncWords, a service that provides actual people who listen to your stream and provide real-time closed captions and real-time translation. If there's a different captioning service you'd like to work with, feel free to work with that provider to test compatibility with Socio. If you have any questions after testing with your provider, let us know via Live Chat or email.

This article focuses on working directly with SyncWords to purchase and coordinate CC service for your event, but the general steps will apply to most providers.

Working with SyncWords

First, gather the following information:

  • The start date of your event

  • The number of sessions for which you need CC

  • The language the presenter(s) will be speaking during the Stream

  • The language(s) CCs should be translated into

  • The Web App URL for your event

Once you've got this information, please fill out this form to start the process. After submitting the form, someone with SyncWords will reach out within 1-2 business days. From there, you'll coordinate with SyncWords on pricing and availability.

As you work with SyncWords, you'll need to add attendee profiles to your event for any SyncWords personnel who will be providing CC for your streams. We recommend that you ensure each captioner is able to log into the event well before the event starts.

How-To

SyncWords will provide Widget Codes for your CC for each stream. Once you have your Widget Codes, you're ready to enter them into your Socio event.

Edit each session or Live Stream feature that will include CC and click the Enable Closed Caption? toggle to turn it on. This will reveal the Widget Code field. Paste in the Widget Code your SyncWords tech supplied to you, then click Save Changes.

⚠️ Caution, when you paste in the Widget Codes, be very sure you're pasting in the correct code for each session or Live Stream. If you paste in the wrong code, SyncWords captioners may run into problems.

Pro Tips! 😎

  • Any information that you can provide to your captioner early (e.g. names of speakers, topic descriptions, etc.) helps them to be better prepared.

  • With SyncWords, each session can only have 1 base language. Meaning you can't have 1 speaker in English, and another speaker in Spanish.

  • SyncWords advertises support for English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French since those are the most commonly requested languages. However, they support many more. Reach out to them for more info.

  • When a stream is over, you can download the recording and send it to SyncWords to have them merge the captions with the recording so you can distribute it with the captions. If this service is critical to your event, verify with other providers to ensure they offer it before contracting their service.

  • SyncWords can provide you with a script of CC for a session. If this service is critical to your event, verify with other providers to ensure they offer it before contracting their service.
